Although the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system, Windows 10 has new options and settings for personalizing the system, many users are satisfied with being able to change the wallpaper of their desktop and little else. However, and although it is something that has been offering Windows for a long time, in Windows 10 it seems that it is giving certain problems to some users, not being able to establish their favorite picture or photo as wallpaper.
Recall that in the latest version of the Microsoft operating system just right-click on an image to set it as wallpaper or go to the new Settings> Customization> Background and choose the image you want. Even so, some users are seeing how, in one way or another, they encounter an error message that prevents them from establishing the photo or image they want in the background of their screen.
If you are in this situation, then we recommend that you follow step by step the different checks that we are going to show next to solve the problem and that you can finally customize your desktop background.
The first one is to verify the activation status of Windows 10 because if our copy of the system is not activated, it will not allow us to change the wallpaper on our desktop. To do this, we go to the Start menu to Settings> Update and security> Windows> Activation and there we can check if our version of Windows 10 is correctly activated or not.
If everything is correct or we have activated Windows 10 but we still can not change the desktop background, the next thing we have to do is check that the change of wallpaper is enabled in the system, something we can do right from the record or from the group Policy, depending on the version of Windows 10 you have on your computer.
If we have the Home version, then we have to open the Windows registry by executing the regedit command and once this is done, we navigate to the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ ActiveDesktop. There we should find an entry with the name NoChangingWallPaper that we must make sure that it has the value 0 so that we can make the change of desktop background.
If we have the Pro or Enterprise version, we can also check that in the Windows group policies, the option to prevent change the wallpaper, which can be found under User Configuration> Administrative Templates> Control panel> Personalization, cannot be found enabled. Otherwise, we must proceed to disable it to allow us to change the wallpaper of our desktop.
